The practice of reducing and reusing bags can help make a positive impact on both the environment and our health. Plastic bags bring various effects and cause damages to every living thing on this planet. Many Americans are not aware of the disastrous effects plastic bags have and spreading awareness as well as educating others should be one of our top priorities. Plastic bags such as paper, polyethylene, and cotton bags should be used more than 3 times. Reusable bags are available all around the world and are meant to be more environmentally friendly. As mentioned, reusable bags are available everywhere, but customers seem to not be interested in buying reusable bags. California was the first state in the United States to officially ban plastic bags and encourage residents to use reusable bags. An additional fee of 10-20 cents depending on the store, is applied for the purchase of plastic bags. Since 2007, this policy has received positive feedback and has led to a 72% reduction in plastic bag pollution. More and more states have decided to adopt California’s policy, and now it has reduced the number of plastic bags by 6 billion per year and is expected to keep decreasing. Plastic bags are damaging our ecosystems, environment, and our health in various ways. Reducing and reusing the amount of plastic bags is going to help us make a better tomorrow.
